Ouvrage collectif réunissant 15 textes et interviews de chercheurs, artistes, éditeurs, collectionneurs et bibliothécaires, The Territories of Artist’s Periodicals est le fruit des présentations et échanges qui se sont déroulés lors du symposium international éponyme, qui s’est tenu en juin 2014 à l’Université Wisconsin-Green Bay (États-Unis).

Il explore le vaste territoire des revues d’artistes et ses frontières quelquefois floues avec les comics, les zines ou les revues d’art laissant la part belle aux expérimentations d’artistes. S’appuyant sur des périodiques publiés après les années 1960, les auteurs interrogent tour à tour le rôle de l’éditeur, l’impact de l’économie, de la politique et des institutions, les liens que ces publications entretiennent avec d’autres pratiques expérimentales contemporaines, ou encore les spécificités de leur diffusion et de leur conservation.

 This 165-page book contains 13 texts and 2 interviews that were presented at the international symposium "The Territories of Artists' Periodicals" (held from June 2 - 4, 2014 on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, USA). Jointly organized by Marie Boivent (Université Rennes 2: France) and Stephen Perkins (UW-Green Bay: USA) this conference sought to take the pulse of both the past and the contemporary history of artists' periodicals. Structured around 5 chapters this book presents periodicals case studies, periodicals surveys, artists' and publishers' testimonies, issues of theory and practice, as well as themes related to archives and archiving.  

This book serves as a smart introduction to a broad range of publishing strategies adopted by artists and others who were experimenting across the field of periodical publishing in new and expanded ways from the 1960s onwards. As a welcome addition to the literature on this long neglected field, it explores the various currents that constitute the territories of artists' periodicals, as well as the accompanying difficulties in establishing the borders between different periodical currents.
